Update on 25MWe biomass power plant for Sappi Ngodwana Pulp and Paper Mill

DP’s 25MWe Biomass Project at Sappi Ngodwana Pulp and Paper Mill in South Africa has successfully completed the first major boiler erection milestone in the installation sequence, with the lifting of the boiler right wall into position. This important achievement was achieved smoothly under perfect working conditions, following several weeks of preparation, planning, preassembly, welding and testing. This critical lifting operation used two cranes -  a 600-tonne capacity crane at the head, and a 100 tonne crane at the tail to precisely align the right water wall with the bottom header nozzles.

The project is located on the site of the Sappi Ngodwana Pulp and Paper Mill in Mpumalanga Province, South Africa, 50km west of Mbombela. When completed, the 25MWe plant will consume up to 35 t/h of biomass waste from surrounding plantations, as well as waste materials from the mill production process. The generated power will be fed into the national grid.
