DP applies “Aerobic Landfill Cell” concept to 2nd project in Belgium

DP has recently signed a contract with Machiels Group, based in Belgium, for the aeration of part of the Remo landfill in Houthalen-Helchteren, Belgium. The site is part of Machiels Group’s initiative for sustainable and innovative landfill management ‘Closing the Circle’ (CtC), and has various phases. Whilst many of the phases are closed, the remaining cell is open at one end for operational reasons, and this open slope emits an odour which sometimes carries to the local community. Previous experience with a similar situation in the Netherlands had resulted in DP’s ‘Aerobic Landfill Cell’ concept. Firstly the open slope is stabilized with a layer of compost mixed with soil, and then the patented Smell-Well system is adapted for these specific conditions. The resulting methane oxidation layer allows landfill gas emissions to be properly collected, thereby eliminating the odour. This project will be delivered with a short leadtime, and is expected to be operational by the end of this year.
